The Full Picture #14: The Conversation About Menopause That Still Isn't Happening

October 05, 2026•4 min read

October is World Menopause Awareness Month.

And yet, for most women, the awareness still isn't there.

Not in doctor's offices. Not at kitchen tables. Not between mothers and daughters.

Women are navigating one of the most significant biological transitions of their lives with almost no roadmap, and the consequences are real.

Welcome to one of the most important conversations we're still not having loudly enough.

What's Actually Happening

The silence around menopause isn't accidental. It's generational. Our mothers didn't explain perimenopause to us because nobody explained it to them. The information simply didn't get passed down, which means every woman enters this transition essentially starting from scratch, decoding her own body without a guide.

World Menopause Awareness Month reminds us that this conversation is worth having out loud. Not in a whisper. Not with an apology attached. Out loud, with the lights on, for every woman sitting somewhere wondering what on earth is happening to her.

This October, my story- the frozen shoulder, the dinner where a thought moved through my mind that didn't belong to me, the moment I finally got the right answer- is on the front cover of The Iconic Woman Magazine. And the billboard advertising it went up in Times Square. I'm sharing this not to make it about me. I'm sharing it because everything in that feature is about the conversation we're still not having loudly enough. Read the full feature in The Iconic Woman Magazine

What This Actually Looked Like For Me

The feature is called The Second Becoming. And it opens with this: an icon is not a woman who always has it all together. She's the one who kept going through the stretch where nothing made sense, and made sure the next woman had the map.

That is the whole mission. That's why the billboard exists, why the book exists, why this newsletter lands in inboxes every Sunday. Not because I had it all together. Because I didn't, and I figured out why, and I refuse to let the next woman go through it alone.

I've been part of The Iconic Woman Magazine before, with articles and a back cover feature. But this is different. This is the inaugural edition under its new name, and they put me on the front cover. That doesn't happen because the topic is niche. It happens because the topic is urgent.

What the Research Says

Research consistently shows that menopause remains one of the least discussed health transitions in women's primary care, with studies finding that fewer than a third of women report having a meaningful conversation with their doctor about menopause symptoms and treatment options.

A global survey on menopause awareness found that the majority of women felt unprepared for the transition and wished they had received more information earlier, with many reporting that their symptoms went unrecognized and untreated for years.

The conversation isn't happening enough. That's why this month exists. And that's why saying it out loud, wherever you are, still matters.

Three Shifts That Actually Help

  1. Tell someone about World Menopause Awareness Month this week. Not a lecture, just a mention. Your daughter, your sister, a colleague. The conversation starts with one person saying the word out loud.

  2. Read the full feature in The Iconic Woman Magazine if you haven't yet. Not because it's about me, but because it's the story of every woman who's ever been handed a wrong diagnosis and had to fight her way to the right one.

  3. Share this post with one woman who needs it. You know who she is. The one who's been quiet about what's been happening. The one who keeps saying she's fine.

Your Move

We all got the puberty talk. Someone sat us down and explained what was coming. Nobody did that for menopause, and that gap is exactly why Hot Flashes & Cold Truths: A No-Nonsense Guide to Menopause exists. This month, more than any other, is the right time to have it in your hands.
